Abstract

Abstract

This final thesis is about teleworking in the context of lockdown as we are experiencing for more than one year. The major aim is to analyse how teleworkers are experiencing the homeworking in such a context.Teleworking has indeed emerged in organizations for several years. But the homeworking enforced due to the coronavirus crisis is quite different from the traditional one. In the context of lockdown teleworkers are obliged to work from home in the presence of their children and their partner. Therefore the conditions in which the homeworking is achieved are different and teleworkers are exposed to some psychosocial risks and encounter several difficulties to conciliate their professional life with their private and family life. However everyone does not experience that situation in the same way. It seems that some factors have an impact on the way teleworkers are living the teleworking during the lockdown. So I have analysed to what extent the teleworker’s gender, the number of children and several managerial practices influence teleworkers’ perceptions and make the conciliation between private and professional lives easier.

Abstract

The aim of this master’s thesis was to study the abundances of multiple tropospheric air pollutants, monitored at the Jungfraujoch Observatory (Switzerland), in the context of the covid-19 lockdown. It was found that the abundance of multiple species was reduced in year 2020 in comparison to the multiyear time series (2010-2019). More specifically, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, CH3OH, H2CO, HCOOH and tropospheric O3 concentrations were reduced during lockdown. However, for CH4, CO, HCN and NH3, no concluding or robust evidences of an effect of lockdown on their abundances was found. Further research is needed to clarify and quantify to what extent the covid-19 lockdown has contributed to this atmospheric change.

Abstract

Domestic violence and more specifically child abuse is a growing societal phenomenon since the early 1990s. In 2020, we were all confronted with an unknown disease: Covid-19. As we know, and as has been noted, the lockdown and measures imposed to protect against this disease have led to several problems, including an increase in domestic violence. Many different studies have been conducted to study this phenomenon, but few have focused on children experiencing intrafamily abuse. Therefore, we interviewed eight criminologists, magistrates and judges of the Family and Youth Prosecutor's Office to find out their views about intrafamily violence during lockdown. We carried out an interview guide with twenty open questions to collect a data to our problematic issue. The result was that none of the professionals interviewed noted a strong increase in cases of intra-family violence in the context of their work. However, if we take all the evidence together, this answer does not seem logical. So, we tried to align all these elements and thus find an explanation for the professionals' feelings.

Abstract

"Resilient Kitchens: American Immigrant Cooking in a Time of Crisis is a stimulating collection of essays about the lives of immigrants in the United States before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, told through the lens of food. Their stories range from emotional reflections on hardship, loss, and resilience to journalistic investigations of racism in the American food system. Aimed at a popular audience and also designed to be suitable for use in undergraduate classrooms, the volume includes a vibrant mix of perspectives from professional food writers, restaurateurs, scholars, and activists. Each contribution is accompanied by a recipe of special importance to the author. These recipes invite readers to materially engage with the essays. The volume features hand-drawn illustrations by Filipino-American artist Angelo Dolojan, gorgeous food photography, and images of pandemic life contributed by all of the authors"--

Abstract

Abstract

NIST Special Publication 800-68 has been created to assist IT professionals, in particularly Windows XP system administrators and information security personnel, in effectively securing Windows XP systems. It discusses Windows XP and various application security settings in technical detail. The guide provides insight into the threats and security controls that are relevant for various operational environments, such as for a large enterprise or a home office. It describes the need to document, implement, and test security controls, as well as to monitor and maintain systems on an ongoing basis. It presents an overview of the security components offered by Windows XP and provides guidance on installing, backing up, and patching Windows XP systems. It discusses security policy configuration, provides an overview of the settings in the accompanying NIST security templates, and discusses how to apply additional security settings that are not included in the NIST security templates. It demonstrates securing popular office productivity applications, Web browsers, e-mail clients, personal firewalls, antivirus software, and spyware detection and removal utilities on Windows XP systems to provide protection against viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and other types of malicious code. This list is not intended to be a complete list of applications to install on Windows XP system, nor does it imply NIST's endorsement of particular commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted economic activity in India. Adjusting policies to contain trans- mission while mitigating the economic impact requires an assessment of the economic situation in near real-time and at high spatial granularity. This paper shows that daily electricity consumption and monthly nighttime light intensity can proxy for economic activity in India. Energy consumption is compared with the predictions of a consumption model that explains 90 percent of the variation in normal times. Energy consumption declined strongly after a national lockdown was implemented on March 25, 2020 and remained a quarter below normal levels throughout April. It recovered somewhat subsequently, but electricity consumption was on average still 13.5 percent lower than normal in May. Not all states and union territories have been affected equally. While electricity consumption halved in some, others were not affected at all. Part of the heterogeneity is explained by the prevalence of manufacturing and return migration. At the district level, higher COVID-19 infection rates were associated with larger declines in nighttime light intensity in April. Together, daily electricity consumption and nighttime light intensity allow monitoring economic activity in near real-time and high spatial granularity.

Abstract

This paper examines cross-country evidence of how the Covid-19 pandemic spread and the mortality rates associated with preexisting vulnerabilities, the government's mobility restriction policy, institutions (democracy), and culture (individualistic culture and trust). Preexisting vulnerabilities (that is, the share of the elderly, urbanization, obesity prevalence, and air pollution) increase the spread of the pandemic and/or the mortality rate. On average, the government policy delay in mobility restriction, democracy, and culture indicators are not significantly associated with the pandemic outcomes. However, government delay in restricting mobility drastically amplifies the positive association between preexisting vulnerabilities and pandemic mortality. Individualistic culture and general trust amplify the positive links between pandemic mortality and the share of elderly people or urbanization. The analysis shows that in modeling the pandemic outcomes, it is important to consider cross-country spatial interactions.
